SAA Webinar: Preserving Audiotapes to Archival Standards

Audio recordings are some of the most common AV materials in archives. From tape cassette recordings of interviews to reel to reel recordings of a speech, from wax cylinders to vinyl. Over time, all audio carriers deteriorate and that impacts the amount and quality of the recording we’re able to hear. In this workshop, a brief overview of audio carriers and the types of deterioration they are most susceptible to will be reviewed. Then we’ll talk about standards for preserving the original carriers and specifications for digitizing the recordings either in-house or using vendors (and what you’ll need to know to succeed). The good news: standards for audio digitization and formatting have been around for decades and are very robust and stable.
