Please join LILRC when we welcome Elizabeth Kahn Kaplan to speak on Emanuel Leutze’s famous painting, Washington Crossing the Delaware. The huge iconic painting, depicting the pivotal moment in December 1776 that breathed new life into the Patriot cause, was revered as a symbol of American freedom and then vilified as a cliché filled with historical errors. Elizabeth will share the truth about that fateful night and the following day, when General George Washington and his rag-tag army defeated the Hessians, hired by King George III, at Trenton, N.J. An independent historian and a volunteer docent at the museum that owns the painting, Elizabeth will analyze Emanuel Leutze’s celebrated work for its truths about the events that Emanuel Leutze was inspired to immortalize in 1850, three generations after the start of the American Revolution, and for its poetic license.
