A message from Cat McIlvaine Smith, the Assistant Director of the Straus Historical Society:
“The Straus Historical Society preserves and shares the history of the Straus family, known for their leadership at Macy’s department store, their association with Titanic, and their significant contributions to American business, politics, and philanthropy. We are currently undertaking a major document digitization initiative to make our unique historical materials more accessible to researchers and the public.
We are seeking dedicated interns to assist with:
· Scanning historical documents and photographs
· Basic metadata creation and cataloging
· Organizing digital files according to archival standards
· Potentially assisting with transcription of handwritten materials
This internship would provide valuable hands-on experience in:
· Professional archival practices
· Digital preservation techniques
· Handling of historically significant materials
· Experience with collection management software
The position would be ideal for students in library science, history, museum studies, digital humanities, or related fields. We offer a supportive learning environment where interns will gain practical skills while contributing to the preservation of important historical materials.
The internship could be structured to accommodate academic requirements for course credit. We are flexible regarding scheduling and can discuss opportunities for any semester.
A visit to our website will provide more information about the Straus family and about our organization. I would be happy to provide additional information about our organization or the internship program.”
Interested candidates may contact Cat (info@straushistory.org) directly with a resume and a brief statement of interest.
