Find out more about volunteering for ACRL/NY!
The Greater New York Metropolitan Area Chapter of ACRL seeks volunteers for appointment or nomination for specific positions for 2023. All of these positions include Executive Board membership but the length of commitment and the scope of responsibility vary quite a bit. Elections and appointments will take place in early November 2022, and individuals will take on these roles in January of 2023.

We are proud that our community is highly diverse, something that is reflected in our leadership and our corps of volunteers. We encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds and working in diverse academic and research contexts to “take a leap” and join our efforts. We champion structures and policies promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Our community is defined, in part, by our local and regional roots. It is expected that Executive Board members will be members of this community and will be able to attend some in-person meetings and events in ADA compliant spaces.

We seek volunteers interested in the following roles for 2023:

Elections Secretary

Symposium Chair or Co-Chairs

Vice-President/President-Elect

Member-at-Large

Below are very brief descriptions of these positions, but you can also get a more detailed perspective on responsibilities for each by reviewing our Detailed Descriptions of Roles and Expectations.

If you’re thinking of becoming more active in the profession and would like to learn more about these or other ACRL/NY opportunities, please reach out! (email [email protected]). Please respond by November 16.

If you feel like you don’t quite fit these descriptions but are still interested in becoming involved, please let us know. These roles might not be exactly what you are imagining and there are lots of other ways to be involved with ACRL/NY.

Elections Secretary, ACRL/NY Executive Board (appointed)
The Elections Secretary is responsible for keeping record of the current and upcoming elected positions of the Executive Board of ACRL/NY, and serves as a member of the Nominations Subcommittee for a minimum one-year term. The ideal Elections Secretary will have good communication skills, work well with others, and apply careful attention to detail. Benefits of the position include Executive Board experience with ACRL/NY, professional networking, plus a letter documenting your service for tenure or promotion if applicable to your position. More detail here.

Symposium Planning Committee Chair or Co-Chairs (appointed)
The 2023 Symposium Chair or Co-Chairs will be responsible for the planning and production of the annual ACRL/NY Symposium in collaboration with the Symposium Planning Committee and with a great deal of support from the Executive Board. The ACRL/NY Symposium is a premier annual event in New York’s library community and this is an exciting opportunity to guide and shape it. The ideal Symposium Chair or Co-Chairs will have experience with event planning and be detail oriented and creative. These individuals will serve a term of one year, but will also mentor their incoming replacement(s). At least one Chair or Co-Chair MUST have served on the Symposium Planning Committee for at least one previous year. Benefits of the position include Executive Board experience with ACRL/NY, networking opportunities, committee chair experience, plus a letter documenting your service for tenure or promotion if applicable to your position. More detail here.

President’s Council (Vice-President/President/Immediate Past President) (elected)
ACRL/NY seeks nominees to run for the office of Vice-President/President-Elect. This individual will serve three years in the President’s Council,

First as
Vice-President
(when they will lead the Nominations and Programming Subcommittees)

Then as
President
(presiding over the Executive Board and
representing the chapter nationally)

Then as
Immediate-Past President
(supporting the preservation and transmission of organizational knowledge and the transition in leadership).

The ideal President’s Council officer will bring to the role creativity, knowledge, and organizational skills. Benefits of the position include leadership experience, a letter documenting your service for tenure or promotion if applicable to your position, and funding for registration, lodging, and travel to one ACRL National conference during the 3-year term. In addition, they receive funding for registration, travel, and lodging for both ALA conferences during their term as President. (Travel benefits are dependent on the availability of funds.) As Chapter spokesperson and representative to the ACRL Chapters’ Council, the President has a unique opportunity to advance their reputation and network within the profession. More detail here.

Member-at-Large (elected)
Members-at-Large of the Executive Board contribute to Board deliberations, and represent the membership of the organization for a three year term. Each year each Member-at-Large supports one area of work in the organization: symposium planning, supporting the Symposium Co-Chairs; financial operations, supporting the Treasurer and Treasurer-Elect; leadership, supporting the work of the President’s Council. This provides the Members-at-Large with the opportunity to take a deep dive into the work of the organization without the full responsibility of an officer. At the end of the three-year term each Member-at-Large will have garnered a level of familiarity with the overall work of the organization. Benefits of the position include Executive Board experience with ACRL/NY, networking opportunities, plus a letter documenting your service for tenure or promotion if applicable to your position.
