Proposals Submission Deadline: April 5, 2023
Full Chapters Due: August 3, 2023

The “right to read” refers to a student’s right to choose the books and other reading materials that they want to read. Professional values within the fields of education and school librarianship have long articulated the importance of this right, and literacy research illustrates the significance of choice and access to a wide array of books in fostering young people’s motivation to read. Protecting children’s and young adults’ right to read, or intellectual freedom, is critical. The right to read, however, has been threatened in recent years as censorship attempts have surged in public schools and libraries across the United States. In 2021, the American Library Association documented more attempts to restrict access to books than any year since it began collecting data. Books about facets of human diversity such as race, sexual orientation, and gender representation have been particularly targeted by book challengers. This volume is a response to censorship attempts. Its purposes include exploring the reasons why the right to read must be protected, how educators and school librarians may approach making book selections in K-12 contexts, contemporary issues related to the right to read, and how educators, librarians, administrators, and college faculty can advocate for the right to read.

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before April 5, 2023, a chapter proposal of 1,000 to 2,000 words clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors will be notified by April 19, 2023 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by August 3, 2023, and all interested authors must consult the guidelines for manuscript submissions at https://www.igi-global.com/publish/contributor-resources/before-you-write/ prior to submission. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.
