St. John’s DLIS Students Begin Digitizing Naturalization Records at Queens Court Archive

In 2019 Professors James Vorbach and Kristin M. Szylvian responded to a request from archivist Raymond Weaver of the Queens County Clerk’s Office for student assistance with a grant-funded to project to begin digitizing its collection of Naturalization Papers dating from about 1799. Since that time, Catherine Sheehan, Reba Weatherford, Jeanette Lazo, and Ryan McDonnell, all Dual Degree students,  are now or have served as interns with the Queen’s County Clerk office in Jamaica, Queens. SJU students will soon begin developing tools for maximizing digital access for the public. Researchers interested in migration and immigration issues, genealogy, family and community history, and other topics will benefit from this new digital resource. The project will continue through 2021. If you would like to join the team, please email Dr. Szylvian at [email protected].
