Finding Aids for Historical Collections- May 23, 2018

The Committee for the Preservation of Local History presents:
Finding Aids for Historical Collections
With Sharon Pullen, Archivist for the Suffolk County Historic Document Library

Wednesday, May 23, 2018
10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
at
Sachem Public Library
150 Holbrook Road, Holbrook, NY 631-588-5024

Description:

Finding aids are the key to locating archival and other primary source materials.  A finding aid for a specific collection offers a detailed description of the collection’s provenance, scope and content, and how it is finally organized.   This workshop will review the components of a finding aid and offer examples to help you create a template for your current and future collections.  As a tool for yourself and researchers, a finding aid informs those seeking specific information in a collection.  It saves time while informing the public of its existence.

Who should attend:
Anyone seeking to promote the historical/informational value of their institution’s special collections.  This workshop requires some knowledge of arranging and describing archival materials.
