New York Archives Week Symposium “The Uncomfortable Archive”- submission deadline: May 25, 2018

Call for Proposals – New York Archives Week Symposium – The Uncomfortable Archive
Deadline: May 25, 2018

Questionable subject matters. Overly restrictive deeds of gift. Hard-to-justify budgets. We all know any archive worth its salt will (perhapsshould) make its stewards occasionally uneasy. And there are also archives that make people outside their administration uneasy –those holding systematic records of government abuses, say, or unintended documentation of objectionable behaviors– and those archives may face everything from purposeful neglect to physical attacks.
During the 2018 New York Archives Week Symposium, we want to make our colleagues shift in their seats. Bring your stories of quandaries, confrontations and sleepless nights, and make us all think about the ultimate question on personal and professional responsibility: “What would I do?”
Please submit your proposals before midnight on May 25, 2018, indicating clearly whether they are for an individual presentation or an entire panel. Proposals will be evaluated according to the universality and currency of the subject matter, as well as to the general applicability of any proposed solutions.
Please note that these are public presentations, so we encourage judiciousness when presenting potentially offensive material or controversial views.
  • The day will be divided up into four sessions between 60 and 90 minutes.
  • Individual papers or entire panel proposals will be accepted.
  • All individual presentations will be a maximum of 20 minutes long.
  • Each session will have a Q&A period at the end.
  • Submissions must include: title, name of author and institutional affiliation (if applicable), email address, phone number, abstract (250 words max), and indication of technological requirements.
Event Date: October 18, 2018
Location: TBD New York, NY
Submission Deadline: May 25, 2018, at midnight
